Publess Publopedians
The worldwide global pandemic of 2020 (and still not over) dealt a death blow to many a pub in Dublin and many of their frequenters, ourselves included, stranded like gasping fish with not a public house open to host one's hilarity. In these straitened times, we had to be inventive and even regressive, falling back in our thirties on an activity that most leave behind in their teens - so-called 'knacker drinking' (a deeply 'classist' term, we humbly apologise - or not) - namely, the consumption of cans or bottles or tins in the great outdoors, or any unlicensed premises. While legal and enjoyed in many European countries, this activity is still technically illegal in Ireland, and so our outings had to be furtive and wary at times, fearful of the fuzz and the filth.
It should be noted that we believe the consumption of alcohol outdoors in a responsible manner is a very fine thing - a pity that so many fellow drinkers choose to litter and throw their unseemly refuse everywhere like slobbish pigs, resulting perhaps in the activity's current illegality. Let it be noted here that the Publopedians (with one significant and telling exception, noted below in its proper place) never once dropped a can and always binned their garbage no matter how farflung their excursions, keen to leave the beauty spots or sidewalks as we found them. The following is a quick overview of some of the non-pub places we drank in during the pandemic period...
