A fine and very central local pub (one of a string owned by magnate Alfie Mulligan), a stone's throw from Stephen's Green. It gets a mention in Flann O’Brien’s At Swim Two Birds, and has become a favourite with UCD students who fondly call it ‘Harto’s.’ No pretension in the decor; many a sporting triumph commemorated on the walls. The multi-coloured windows cry out to be seen at a certain afternoon hour of a midsummer's day, when the sun spills through at just the right angle to inspire delight and a veritable rainbow of radiance within. Once visited by Enrique Wedgwood Young in the course of a sedate stag night (see the Shelbourne and East Side Tavern), who proclaimed it his favourite pub in Dublin.

On a sombre note – R.I.P. Raphael Mulligan, 46, gaunt and kindly barman, a gentle soul who grew up above the pub and who took an active interest in his customers. In his poignant absence, the pub has grown desperately melancholic. [1]
