279) The Berkeley of Mountjoy Street, D7

This is a family friendly pub with lots of TV screens and a pool table in the lounge. The lounge itself is cavernous and unused most of the time, coming alive for birthdays and suchlike events. The much smaller bar is comfortable and staff are amiable. Beamish, happily, is very much on the menu, going for a clean price of four euros. [1]

Update as of 2022: The Berkeley is no more. It has had a makeover and now operates as ‘Nanny O’Shea’s.’ Refreshing to note is that they state proudly on their facade that they were founded in not some bullshit year, but in 2022.

FOOTNOTE

[1] If taking a sup here may we suggest you work up a thirst by first walking up Blessington Street which is just around the corner from the Berkeley. At the top of this street is Dublin’s secret garden: The Blessington Street Basin. An unusual and beautiful park surrounding a large body of water with an island at the centre which is home to various species of wildlife. The Berkeley pub is less than a four-minute walk away and so is one of the closest watering holes to the oasis in the Basin.
