222) McCann’s of James’s Street, D8

Claims to be established in 1759 with a bar on the site since 1810. The pub is now part of the new Pearse and Lyons distillery which stands adjacent within a deconsecrated church boasting a glass steeple. The ever present smoking militant obstructing the ingress caused us to pass this pub on several occasions. Eventually our balls grew bigger and over the threshold we wobbled (a few pints to the good). Of course, you won’t find a Beamish here given its proximity to the Guinness Brewery, indeed Guinness advertisements and paraphernalia are in abundance. Period photographs of olden Dublin decorate the window sills out front. A prominent Anderson clock dominates behind the bar, and old style curtains and décor give this small bar a homely feel. A pleasing pint at a pleasing price. Like many on our list, it’s a pub with a bark worse than its bite.

Update as of 2021: Rumour has is it that this pub may never again reopen its doors. Time will tell…
