Another Ranelagh staple and popular with locals. A nice window seat affords a good view on a quiet day. Was once reputedly, according to the redoubtable Mac Maloney, a staple local for Flann O'Brien, sot. If ever bewitched, bewildered or befuddled fear not, the big sign outside clearly states that this is, without a doubt, a: ‘TRADITIONAL PUB.’ Established in 1850, it has a striking layer of red tiles at its base, and a large Guinness mural on the side of the building.

Inside is brilliantly illuminated with low stained-glass windows running along the length of the pub as it stretches down the sleepy Anna Villa. Mirrors are plentiful which bounce around the light and a fine open fire above an antique clock may persuade the fleeting drinker to stay for another. Bitter-sweet is the supply of Beamish, the fluid is fulsome but at a regrettably pricey price of €5.00 a pint. On exit one can spit the distance to the neighbouring pub McSorley’s
