150) Arthur’s Pub of Thomas Street, D8

Close to the Guinness Storehouse. This is a busy tourist pub opposite St. Catherine’s church. It serves a fine pint of stout and there’s an extensive food menu. Its best feature is a great big open turf fire at the back of the pub which is well maintained by the bar staff. However, on one occasion, while we were gratefully warming the meat of our marrow, the barman was being neglectful and the brave little flame was on the way to meet its maker. Stephens took it upon himself to throw a great big lump of dirty turf onto the ember. The cry of Coll after enduring several uneasy minutes: “the fire rises!” We both were very much taken by a female patron of supreme beauty on a particular night in winter. Thanks to our too frequent and none-too-subtle admiration of her fine form from a distance, we were caught red blooded by a barman who appeared to have a dog in this fight. Probably her beau, who’s to know? In sum: nice pints, great fire, attractive clientele, temperance required.
